Why Should I Consider Dental Implants?

If teeth are missing too long, the jaw bone near that tooth could be lost and reabsorbed into our body. This bone loss can spread to neighboring bones, compromising other teeth and possibly even affecting the overall shape of your bite and face. Dental implants stimulate the jawbone like the roots of your natural teeth. This stimulation allows the jawbone to regenerate and remain a sturdy support for teeth and facial muscles.

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Dental implants are a safe and effective permanent tooth replacement option for most. As with any surgery, there are slight risks of infection and rejection, but your dentist will go over these risks during your consultation. Most patients experience little to no complications.

The Dental Implant Process

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Evaluation

The first step in the dental implant process is an initial appointment. Dr. Palmateer, our dental implant expert, will assess your oral health, discuss your individual needs and goals, and determine your candidacy for implants. This may involve X-rays and 3D imaging to create a precise treatment plan. In some cases, additional procedures, like a bone graft, may be required before implant placement.

Step 2: Implant Placement Surgery

Once the jawbone is ready, the implant placement surgery is performed. The procedure is always done under local anesthesia for the patient’s comfort. Dr. Palmateer surgically places a small titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as an artificial tooth root. A healing cap is then placed over the implant to protect it while the surrounding bone heals.

Step 3: Osseointegration (Healing Period)

After the implant is placed, the healing process begins. Over the next three to six months, the implant fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This integration is essential for creating a strong, durable foundation for the final restoration. During this period, patients are advised to follow good oral hygiene practices and avoid putting excessive pressure on the implant site.

Step 4: Custom Dental Crown Placement

The final step involves placing a custom-made dental crown on the abutment. This crown is designed to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural-looking smile. The crown is securely attached to complete the restoration, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. After the implant is placed, regular check-ups are necessary to monitor healing and function.
